Viber announces new desktop app, revamps Android and iOS versions

Viber announces new desktop app, revamps Android and iOS versions

Along with claiming more than 200 million users worldwide, Viber's also taking this day to announce what it is referring to as the biggest update to the service yet. For starters, the Viber for Android and iOS applications have both been on the receiving end of a pretty meaningful refresh, following the recent introduction of VoIP calling on older versions of BlackBerry OS. An all-new desktop app will, as of today, also be available to Viber users on a Mac or PC (Linux coming soon, we're told), packing in most of the features the service is well-known for but in a less-mobile form.

Folks using Viber's iOS and Android apps will see many changes to the overall user experience in version 3.0, including added support for video messages, a novel voice engine to help improve call quality, the ability to check contacts' online status and a completely redesigned interface. Meanwhile, the newly minted Viber Desktop features video calling and seamlessly integrates / syncs with the mobile offerings -- which makes things like being able to transfer ongoing voice calls between devices possible. While chatting with the company's CEO, Talmon Marco, he told us development for BlackBerry 10 is in its "advanced stages," adding that the latest Viber apps were built from the ground up and are all part of the goal to "be better and avoid the same mistake" as other similar platforms.

Blue Jays flex muscles, pound Mariners

By IAN HARRISON

TORONTO (AP) - For a Blue Jays team that hasn't had much to smile about this season, this was the laugher they've long been waiting for.

Mark DeRosa hit a three-run homer, Melky Cabrera added a solo shot and Toronto snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Seattle Mariners 10-2 on Sunday.

"We were desperate for that. We needed something like that," manager John Gibbons said. "It's not like we're just waiting to get on a roll. We needed a win and they're hard to come by."

Brandon Morrow pitched three-hit ball over eight innings for his first win of the year. He struck out eight, matching a season high.

"Definitely a morale booster," Morrow said.

Cabrera was 3 for 4 with two RBIs while DeRosa went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and scored three times as the Blue Jays improved to 8-0 when scoring five or more runs. Toronto's 10 runs matched a season high.

"That's a pretty good recipe today for winning," Gibbons said. "Great pitching and we made a lot of things happen offensively."

The last-place Blue Jays had lost 14 of their previous 18, a disappointing stretch for a team expected to contend in the AL East this season.

"It wears on you a little bit," Morrow said. "Guys would come in every day ready to play and in the right state of mind, but there's some things throughout the games, maybe not even things in our control, just little things here and there that you say things are just kind of against us right now. That starts to wear on you, but today was a good day for us."

DeRosa, who called a team meeting before last Sunday's loss at New York, one that capped a four-game sweep by the Yankees, insisted the Blue Jays remain confident in their playoff chances despite being 10 games under .500.

"No one has given up in here," De Rosa said. "We're going to keep fighting and we've got the guys to do it."

Morrow (1-2) allowed two runs and walked a season-high five in the longest outing by a Toronto starter this year. He had not won since beating Minnesota last Oct. 3, the final day of the 2012 season.

"We definitely needed that," Gibbons said of Morrow's long outing. "Our bullpen is beat up."

Steve Delabar finished in the ninth for the Blue Jays, who outhit Seattle 15-3 and improved to 7-12 at home.

Mariners left-hander Joe Saunders (2-4) allowed seven runs and nine hits in five innings, losing for the third time in four starts. Saunders walked two, struck out none and dropped to 0-4 with a 12.53 ERA in four road starts.

"I just think it's somewhat of a fluke thing right now," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "It's gained a little bit of momentum and we've got to stop it."

The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the first when Rajai Davis doubled, advanced on Cabrera's sacrifice and scored on Jose Bautista's sacrifice fly to shallow right field, a high popup that was caught by second baseman Dustin Ackley after he struggled with the sun.

Toronto made it 3-0 in the second on an RBI single by Maicer Izturis and an RBI groundout by Munenori Kawasaki.

Morrow retired 10 in a row before running into trouble in the fifth, when he gave up two runs on four walks and a single. Robert Andino drove in the first run with a fielder's choice and Kyle Seager added a sacrifice fly.

"I just got a little too loose in my mechanics, but I cleaned it up and was good the rest of the time," Morrow said.

The Blue Jays pulled away with a pair of homers in the bottom half. Cabrera led off with his first of the year, a drive off the facing of the second deck in left, and mimed high-fives after his teammates jokingly failed to respond upon his return to the dugout.

Bautista walked, Edwin Encarnacion flied out to the warning track in left and J.P. Arencibia singled before DeRosa hammered a pitch to straightaway center for his second homer of the season.

Toronto made it 8-2 with a run off Hector Noesi in the sixth, with Kawasaki scoring on Encarnacion's bases-loaded fielder's choice. The Blue Jays added two more in the seventh on RBI singles by Kawasaki and Cabrera.

Morrow, meanwhile, responded to his shaky fifth by retiring eight straight - four on strikeouts. The streak ended when Kendrys Morales doubled on an infield popup in the eighth after first baseman Encarnacion tripped over the mound.

"I feel bad because it's probably my ball," said DeRosa, the third baseman. "It was a high sky. I kind of went for it and was waiting for someone to call it. He called it and the next thing I know he's on the ground. When you win the game 10-2, you can laugh those things off."

NOTES: The Mariners have not swept a three-game series in Toronto since May 11-13, 2001. ... Seattle OF Michael Saunders made a leaping catch at the wall to take extra bases away from Arencibia for the final out of the third. ... Blue Jays 3B Brett Lawrie got the day off. ... Toronto RHP Justin Germano, designated for assignment last week, has been sent outright to Triple-A Buffalo. ... The Blue Jays play 10 of their next 12 games on the road.

Mathematicians help to unlock brain function

Monday, May 6, 2013

Mathematicians from Queen Mary, University of London will bring researchers one-step closer to understanding how the structure of the brain relates to its function in two recently published studies.

Publishing in Physical Review Letters the researchers from the Complex Networks group at Queen Mary's School of Mathematics describe how different areas in the brain can have an association despite a lack of direct interaction.

The team, in collaboration with researchers in Barcelona, Pamplona and Paris, combined two different human brain networks - one that maps all the physical connections among brain areas known as the backbone network, and another that reports the activity of different regions as blood flow changes, known as the functional network. They showed that the presence of symmetrical neurons within the backbone network might be responsible for the synchronised activity of physically distant brain regions.

Lead author Vincenzo Nicosia, said "We don't fully understand how the human brain works. So far the focus has been more on the analysis of the function of single, localised regions. However, there isn't a complete model that brings the whole functionality of the brain together. Hopefully, our research will help neuroscientists to develop a more accurate map of the brain and investigate its functioning beyond single areas."

The research adds to the recent findings published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in which the QM researchers along with the Department of Psychiatry at University of Cambridge analysed the development of the brain of a small worm called Caenorhabditis elegans. In this paper, the team examined the number of links formed in the brain during the worm's lifespan, and observed an unexpected abrupt change in the pattern of growth, corresponding with the time of egg hatching.

"The research is important as it's the first time that a sharp transition in the growth of a neural network has ever been observed," added Dr Nicosia.

"Although we don't know which biological factors are responsible for the change in the growth pattern, we were able to reproduce the pattern using a simple economical model of synaptic formation. This result can pave the way to a deeper understanding of how neural networks grow in more complex organisms."

The Complex Networks group at Queen Mary is headed by Professor Vito Latora. Aside from theoretical research about the structure and function of complex networks, the group is working on the characterisation of multi-layer brain networks, aimed at reconciling and integrating different brain signals to produce a more informative picture of the human brain.

Cooler weather aids fight against Calif. wildfire

CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) ? Cool, moist air moving into Southern California on Sunday helped firefighters build containment lines around a huge wildfire burning through coastal mountains.

Fire crews took advantage of improved conditions as the high winds and hot, dry air of recent days were replaced by the normal Pacific air, significantly reducing fire activity.

The 44-square-mile blaze at the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains was 60 percent surrounded.

Full containment was expected Monday, according to Ventura County fire officials.

The progress led authorities to lift all remaining evacuation orders.

"We've really transitioned from a fire attack to a mop-up patrol," Nick Schuler, battalion chief for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, told the Ventura County Star.

One firefighter was injured in the Newbury Park area while battling the blaze and was taken to a hospital, the newspaper said.

The National Weather Service said an approaching low pressure system would bring a 20 percent chance of showers Sunday afternoon, with the likelihood increasing into the night and on Monday.

Nearly 2,000 firefighters using engines, bulldozers and aircraft worked to corral the blaze.

Firefighting efforts were focused on the fire's east side, rugged canyons that are a mix of public and private lands.

The change in the weather was also expected to bring gusty winds to some parts of Southern California, but well away from the fire area.

Despite its size and speed of growth, the fire that broke out Thursday and quickly moved through neighborhoods of Camarillo Springs and Thousand Oaks has caused damage to just 15 homes, though it has threatened thousands.

The fire also swept through Point Mugu State Park, a hiking and camping area that sprawls between those communities and the ocean. Park district Superintendent Craig Sap said two old, unused ranch-style homes in the backcountry burned. Restrooms and campgrounds also were damaged. Sap estimated repairs would cost $225,000.

Grateful residents hung signs thanking firefighters for saving their homes.

The blaze is one of more than 680 wildfires in the state so far this year ? about 200 more than average.

East of Los Angeles in Riverside County, a new fire that broke out Saturday afternoon burned 650 acres of wilderness south of Banning. It was 75 percent contained Sunday. Banning has been flanked by a nearly 5-square-mile fire to the north which destroyed one home shortly after it broke out Wednesday. That fire was fully contained late Saturday.

In Northern California, a fire that has blackened 11 square miles of wilderness in Tehama County was a threat to a pair of commercial properties near the community of Butte Meadows, according to Cal Fire.

Thunderstorms were expected to bring erratic winds but little rain to the area about 200 miles north of San Francisco.

Nearly 1,300 firefighters were on the lines and the blaze, which started Wednesday, was 40 percent contained.

Risk of death has decreased substantially for children initially treated with dialysis for end-stage kidney disease

May 4, 2013 ? In a study that included more than 20,000 patients, there was a significant decrease in the United States in mortality rates over time among children and adolescents initiating end-stage kidney disease treatment with dialysis between 1990 and 2010, according to a study in the May 8 issue of JAMA. The study is being released early online to coincide with its presentation at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting.

"Individuals with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) face a significantly shortened life expectancy. In no group of ESKD patients is the loss of potential years of life larger than in children and adolescents. Although transplant remains the treatment of choice to maximize survival, growth, and development, 75 percent of children with ESKD require treatment with dialysis prior to receiving a kidney transplant. Dialysis is therefore a life-saving therapy for children with ESKD while they await transplant. Nevertheless, all-cause mortality rates in children receiving maintenance dialysis are at least 30 times higher than the general pediatric population, with even higher relative risks in very young children," the authors write. "There have been substantial improvements in the care of children with ESKD between 1990 and 2010. However, to our knowledge, it is not known if mortality has changed over time in the United States, particularly in recent years."

Mark M. Mitsnefes, M.D., M.Sc., of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and colleagues conducted a study to determine if all-cause, cardiovascular, and infection-related mortality rates have changed between 1990 and 2010 among patients younger than 21 years of age with ESKD initially treated with dialysis and if changes in mortality rates over time differed by age at treatment initiation. The researchers used data from the United States Renal Data System. Children with a prior kidney transplant were excluded.

The researchers identified 23,401 children and adolescents who met study criteria. Crude mortality rates during dialysis treatment were higher among children younger than 5 years at the start of dialysis compared with those who were 5 years and older. The authors found that the all-cause mortality risk decreased progressively over calendar time for both those younger than 5 years and those 5 years and older at initiation. There was also a decrease over calendar time for cardiovascular and infection-related mortality risk among children younger than 5 years at initiation and among those 5 years and older.

"Numerous factors may have contributed to the observed reductions in mortality risk over time. Improved pre-dialysis care, advances in dialysis technology, and greater experience of clinicians may each have played a role," the authors write.

"Almost all children initiating ESKD treatment are considered eligible for transplant. However, most will require dialysis during their lifetime, either before transplant or after allograft loss. In the United States, there was a significant decrease in mortality rates over time among children and adolescents initiating ESKD treatment with dialysis between 1990 and 2010. Further research is needed to determine the specific factors responsible for this decrease."

(AP) ? Search teams on Saturday found the bodies of two American crew members near where their military refueling plane crashed in the rugged mountains of Kyrgyzstan, while the third crew member was still missing, the emergencies minister of the Central Asian nation said.

The KC-135 plane crashed Friday afternoon about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of the air base that the U.S. operates in Kyrgyzstan to support military operations in Afghanistan.

Officials at the U.S. Transit Center at the Manas base have released no information yet on the cause of the crash and could not immediately be reached on Saturday for any further information.

Emergencies Minister Kubatbek Boronov told The Associated Press that Kyrgyz search teams found the two fragmented bodies Saturday morning and they have not yet been identified. He said the Kyrgyz rescuers were working with U.S. military personnel from Manas to search for the third crewman and the flight recorders.

Dozens of U.S. military personnel scoured the area on Saturday and set up a security cordon around the crash site.

Parts of the plane were scattered across a wide area near the village of Chaldovar. Some pieces, including the tail, came down in a grassy valley bordered by steep mountains, but others landed in spots much more difficult for search teams to reach.

Residents of the rural, sheep-herding region described hearing the plane explode in the air and seeing it break apart as it fell.

"I heard a very loud explosion," Emil Bokochev, a member of the village council, told an AP reporter at the site. "Literally six or seven seconds afterward there was another explosion and the plane broke apart into four or five pieces and at that moment we thought it was going to fall on the village Chaldovar."

The plane was on a refueling mission for Afghanistan war operations at the time of the crash, a U.S. defense official in Washington said, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to discuss the details of an ongoing investigation.

The U.S. base, which is adjacent to Manas International Airport outside Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital, was established in late 2001 to support the international military campaign in Afghanistan. It functions as an interim point for troops going into or out of Afghanistan and as a home for the tanker planes that refuel warplanes in flight.

The Manas base has been the subject of a contentious dispute between the United States and its host nation.

In 2009, the U.S. reached an agreement with the Kyrgyz government to use it in return for $60 million a year. But the lease runs out in June 2014, and the U.S. wants to keep the base longer to aid in the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan is reluctant to extend the lease.
