Former Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who was a star in the Seattle soccer scene until his retirement in 2011, will have a stint as the goalkeeper coach for the U.S. men?s national team through the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Keller, 43, just finished a similar job with the U.S. under-20 national team. Now he?ll be coaching the top squad during the Gold Cup quarterfinals July 20 and 21, and through the tournament final June 28 if the United States make it that far, according to MLSSoccer.com.
?With the under-20s, you don?t miss a game. For the full national team, it?s a bit different ball game,? Keller told MLSSoccer.com?s Jeremiah Oshan. ?It?s a little interesting on that side of it. It?s nice being involved with the national team programs when it works, and this is just one of those situations that we?re making it work.
?I enjoy coaching,? Keller added. ?I enjoy helping out, but right now I?m very happy with my broadcasting and I?ve got a couple years left on that contract. I?m happy to keep pursuing that.?
Keller currently works as the color commentator on Sounders FC local broadcasts, and often helps out Seattle?s goalkeepers with training. He still lives in the Seattle area with his wife and twin children.
He played for the Sounders from their inaugural MLS season in 2009 through 2011, when Seattle won its second-consecutive U.S. Open Cup. Keller was also on the USMNT roster from 1990 through 2007, playing in four World Cups and accruing 101 caps with the national team.
The coaching stint, however, is not an audition for a longer-term job, Keller told MLSSoccer.com. It?s more that he?s doing U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann a favor after the previous goalkeeper coach, Chris Woods, took a job with Manchester United earlier this month.
