Apple acknowledges Do Not Disturb bug, says it will magically fix itself on January 7th

Well, it's no "you're holding it wrong," but we can't say we're 100 percent satisfied with Apple's response to the recent discovery of a bug affecting iOS's Do Not Disturb feature. Starting January first, ringers failed to turn back on after the predetermined silent period. Today Cupertino seemed to acknowledge the existence of the flaw but, rather than offer a patch, it simply told customers to be patient:

"Do Not Disturb scheduling feature will resume normal functionality after January 7, 2013. Before this date, you should manually turn the Do Not Disturb feature on or off."

Understandably, it'll probably take longer than five days to find the offending code, whip up a fix, test it and roll it out to users. Still, a thorough explanation is always appreciated and the iOS faithful have already been patient enough.

Trade, tax, transparency on June G8 meet agenda - UK

LONDON (Reuters) - Trade, tax compliance and promoting greater transparency will be the main focus of the next meeting of leaders of the Group of Eight major economies in June, Britain said on Wednesday as it assumed the group's rotating presidency.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he hoped the group's seven other member nations - the United States, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, Canada and Germany - would join Britain in trying to "fire up economies and drive prosperity".

"At the heart of my agenda for the Summit are three issues - advancing trade, ensuring tax compliance and promoting greater transparency," Cameron said in a letter to other G8 leaders.

The next G8 meeting is expected to be held in Lough Erne in Northern Ireland.

On trade, Cameron said deals between the European Union and Canada, Japan and the United States was on the table, and efforts are also expected to be made to close international tax loopholes and strengthen global tax standards.

Cameron also hopes to boost transparency and accountability of aid spending.

The British prime minister said the G8 economies together account for around half of the world's economic output and so should be able to achieve ambitious goals.

However, experts question the group's continuing relevancy given it does not include rising powers China, Brazil or India.

Making Web Marketing Work For Your Business - Maynas Eric

If you?re personally honest with your Affiliate marketing, you want to work hard to make money. In addition to the freedom owning a business provides, you must be passionate and dedicated to effective affiliate marketing skills. Try out some practical tips you?re about to read in order to help make it happen.

Provide something really unique on your website. If you can offer a unique, exclusive product, it can make a dramatic difference in the amount of traffic you receive. The readers will then be more likely to really be interested in the products that you offer which makes your site more legitimate and improves your ranking.

Offering a subscription service is a great way to build relationships with customers who are interested in your product. An example for this would be offering customers who buy bulk computer paper the option of getting it shipped monthly at a large discount.

TIP! Make sure that all images placed on your site include captions. Search engine algorithms will factor the relevancy of text in the captions in to how relevant your site is to a keyword being searched.

It is important to keep track of online sentiment whenever you have an event or promotion running. This allows you to tailor your future strategies more effectively. After you have launched your online promotion event, keep track of the way people are responding to it on forums and blogs. Incorporate your customers advice as a way to make your customers feel that they are respected.

Create a bond of loyalty with you customers and they will continue to support your business. Try to let the visitor in on how much your product or service would make their life better. Focus your copy on making your customer feel as if they are already experiencing the value and benefits of your product, while reading the ad.

To increase the quality of your internet promotion, start blogging. Blogging regularly gives you an excellent avenue from which to communicate directly with your customers. Adding a blog to your site will your increase the dimension of your site which will increase your search engine discernibility; this will ultimately send more traffic your way over time.

TIP! When you are starting out your site and are trying to make the best site you can for marketing your product on the internet, start small. Having too many indexed pages such as a million or more can cause a search engine to pass by your site, in favor of one that has around ten thousand or twenty thousand.

A strong job title can help build respect among your peers. If you are the owner of a business you should be the CEO. If you are not a business owner, still see if there is a title that you can create that gives a sense of presence and strength. Use the title in your articles and all correspondence including emails.

Creative and original content is key to an Affiliate marketing strategy that is effective. It is essential that you review the content often to make sure that you are providing a message that is relevant to your customers. Make sure to have someone else critique your content. Fresh perspective can really help! Using spellcheck and grammar check programs is standard practice to avoid unprofessional typos and mistakes.

You can boost your own authenticity and standing by offering space on your website for major institutions to advertise in. If potential customers notice that impressive firms are linked with yours, they will gain greater confidence in your offerings. Allowing this to take place will increase your traffic, and your site will become more popular instead of another business listing.

TIP! Try to place banners on your web site that do not have the appearance of being banners. Give them the impression that they are links to more content.

There are many facets to internet promotion that will help increase your profits. You can still hold true to your ideals, and enjoy what you do, but you will be making a profit at the end of the day.

Wall Street surges in wake of fiscal pact

During an oddly jokey statement at the White House as the fiscal deadline bore down Monday afternoon, President Obama said, "I'm going to be president for the next four years. I?hope." He was warning Republicans that, yes, they'd have to deal with him for a while. But it was, to be sure, a strange moment. Could he actually have been joking about assassination? About impeachment? The?apocalypse? Or has everyone just had enough of these negotiations??

Business Resolutions for 2013 | Geoff Livingston's Blog

Dawn and the Washington Monument

A new year is upon us, and like many others I have a few resolutions for my business and online life.

In addition to discussing the environment more frequently, here are some of my goals:

Less Travel

Philly During the Day B&W

Last year was my worst travel year since 2009, doubling my normal road time. This travel was in large part to support Marketing in the Round (co-author Gini Dietrich also travelled extensively). By my calculations, I traveled at least one day a week 60% of the year, and from March until December it was more than 80%.

The impact on my family and personal exhaustion was significant.

There is no new book to promote in 2013. While I?m always game to travel for business reasons, the marketing and social media speaking circuits will see less of me next year? Unless people are willing to pay a significant fee.

It?s not about making money, rather creating a significant barrier so that I am on the road less. I want to be present for my daughter.

Business Only

It seems like I?ve had a serious pet project for each of the last three years. Whether it was fighting for the Gulf, writing and promoting books, or starting a company, there was an extra project at hand in addition to normal consulting.

In 2013, I intend to work hard in my business (including here on this blog), and turn off the lights. It?s a year to recharge the batteries, focus on what matters most, and run and bike outside.

My extra project for 2013 is being a Dad and a husband. That?s enough.

Take a Photography Class

Jefferson's Vegetable Garden Terrace

I receive a lot of compliments about my photography, which as a self taught amateur pleases me to no end. But I?d like to improve on my hobby a little.

Plus photography helps me relax, providing an easy creative outlet that doesn?t involve the rigmarole of developing, writing, publishing and marketing a book.

So next year, I will invest some time and take a photography class. Here is to learning new insights!

Meditate

When a human doing stops to become a human being, it?s inevitable that you start to think. A lot.

That?s OK. Meditation bears creative fruit, always. That?s my experience.

So what?s next after some serious rest? Who knows? I certainly have a couple ideas now, but after meditation they could be completely invalid.

Until it?s the path is clear, living in the present for a little while seems appropriate.

I?m sure just working hard, taking great pics, and meditating during off hours will produce a vision.

Personal Insight: When Being Right is Wrong or Irrelevant

by Michael Josephson on December 31, 2012

As I reflected on the year gone by as a prelude to doing better in the year to come I realized how many times I (and others) have caused strife and sometimes done serious relationship damage with no?benefit whatever in an effort to ?be right.? I?ve discovered three stages of rightosis: 1) certainty that I am right about something or someone, 2) a desire to be sure others know I am (or was) right, and 3) a desire to have another person not only acknowledge I was right, but that they were wrong. Reasons #2 and 3 are pretty pathetic signs of egotism, but what about #1? Well even if I could be silently and anonymously right (and my certainty is no evidence that I really am right), it?s rare that it really matters to anyone but me whether I?m right or not. The pursuit of being right is a habit I?d like to break. How about you?

Cancer - Genetically Engineered T-cells Show Promise in ...

Genetically Engineered T-cells Show Promise in Treating Leukemia 0 5

If genetic engineering sounds a little creepy to you, akin to lab-produced glow-in-the-dark worms and mutant humans with superpowers, I know some really cool researchers who might change your mind.

These researchers, led by Dr. Aaron P. Rapoport , the Gary Jobson Professor in Medical Oncology and Director of Gene Medicine/Lymphoma at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, are using genetic engineering to get some pretty impressive results for people suffering with difficult-to-treat multiple myeloma (MM), a type of cancer that starts in bone marrow.

Although about 35 percent of patients benefit from standard treatment, i.e. longer life, less pain and fewer complications, there is virtually no cure for multiple myeoma. Rapoport says standard treatment is effective ? at least for a while, but in many MM patients it eventually stops working and there is a recurrence of disease.

Unfortunately, standard treatment is less effective for people with aggressive MM, who realize limited benefits for short intervals. The disease is marked by a high prevalence of infections such as pneumonia, bone pain, hypercalcemia (elevated calcium in the blood), renal failure and spinal cord compression.

That's where genetic engineering comes in.

Genetic engineering, technically known as recombinant DNA technology, is a fairly new concept that?s increasingly becoming an important tool in treating HIV-AIDS and cancer. Perhaps, in the future, conditions such as hemophilia, Parkinson?s disease, diabetes and a form of inherited high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia).

Researchers are investigating right now to determine whether or not recombinant DNA technology will slow or cure these diseases.

There are two main ways in which genetic engineering is being used.

In the first, researchers pluck genes from one type of organism, say algae or sheep for example, and combine them with genes from a second organism ? like you and me.

We?re not talking science fiction animal-human hybrids here.

We value and respect the experiences of all of our HERWriters, but everyone is different. Many of our writers are speaking from personal experience, and what's worked for them may not work for you. Their articles are not a substitute for medical advice although we hope you can gain knowledge from their insight.
