Physical activity, school performance may be linked

ScienceDaily (Jan. 2, 2012) ? A systematic review of previous studies suggests that there may be a positive relationship between physical activity and the academic performance of children, according to a report in the January issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Amika Singh, Ph.D., of the Vrije Universiteit University Medical Center, EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and colleagues reviewed evidence about the relationship between physical activity and academic performance because of concerns that pressure to improve test scores may often mean more instructional time for classroom subjects with less time for physical activity.

The authors identified 10 observational and four interventional studies for review. Twelve of the studies were conducted in the United States, plus one in Canada and one in South Africa. Sample sizes ranged from 53 to about 12,000 participants between the ages of 6 years and 18 years. Follow-up varied from eight weeks to more than five years.

"According to the best-evidence synthesis, we found strong evidence of a significant positive relationship between physical activity and academic performance. The findings of one high-quality intervention study and one high-quality observational study suggest that being more physically active is positively related to improved academic performance in children," the authors comment.

Background information in the article suggests that exercise may help cognition by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain, increasing levels of norepinephrine and endorphins to decrease stress and improve mood, and increasing growth factors that help create new nerve cells and support synaptic plasticity.

Still, "relatively few studies of high methodological quality have explored the relationship between physical activity and academic performance," the authors conclude. No study in their systematic review used an objective measure of physical activity.

"More high-quality studies are needed on the dose-response relationship between physical activity and academic performance and on the explanatory mechanisms, using reliable and valid measurement instruments to assess this relationship accurately," the authors conclude.

German president faces new fire in loan dispute

Associated Press

Posted on January 2, 2012 at 10:03 AM

Updated today at 10:05 AM

BERLIN (AP) ? A German newspaper says the country's president complained to its editor about its plans to report on a private loan he received and threatened legal action.

On Dec. 13 the mass-circulation Bild daily reported for the first time that President Christian Wulff had received a ?500,000 ($650,000) private loan from the wife of a wealthy businessman and friend, apparently at below market rates, in 2008 ? before he became president.

Wulff has been under pressure to explain the loan since.

Bild said Monday that Wulff on Dec. 12 tried to reach editor-in-chief Kai Diekmann. It said Wulff left an indignant message about Bild's research into the loan on Diekmann's cell phone mailbox and threatened legal action against editors involved.

Wulff's office said he greatly values media freedom and doesn't comment on private conversations.

Court delays border-crossing pollution rule (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A federal court is putting on hold a controversial Obama administration regulation aimed at reducing power plant pollution in 27 states that contributes to unhealthy air downwind.

More than a dozen electric power companies, municipal power plant operators and states had sought to delay the rules until the litigation plays out. A federal appeals court in Washington approved their request Friday.

Republicans in Congress have attempted to block the rule using legislation, saying it would shutter some plants and kill jobs. While those efforts succeeded in the Republican-controlled House, the Senate in November rejected an attempt to stay the regulation.

The rule, finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency in July, replaces a 2005 Bush administration proposal that was rejected by a federal court.

The Bush-era rule will remain in effect.

(AP) ? Flying cameras have been providing unique perspectives on everything from golf to college and professional football for more than a decade, becoming so commonplace that fans rarely notice the whizzing remote-controlled devices.

At the Insight Bowl on Friday night, no one could miss the overhead camera when it came crashing down to the field late in the fourth quarter, nearly taking out one of the players.

The ESPN camera narrowly missed Iowa receiver Martin McNutt Jr., who became entangled in the guide wire but wasn't hurt.

"First, I looked: 'What is it that fell from the sky?'" McNutt said after Iowa's 31-14 loss to No. 19 Oklahoma. "The next thing I know, the camera kind of scratched me a little bit. It was just pulling me and I knew I didn't want to keep going with it."

The camera at the Insight Bowl was supplied by SkyCam, a division of Winnercomm, Inc., a sports production and development company in Tulsa, Okla. According to the company's website, SkyCam is the only stabilized camera system in the world that can unobtrusively fly anywhere in a defined three-dimensional space.

The camera is 36 inches high, weighs 25 pounds and travels up to 30 mph across the guide wire, according to the company.

"We apologize for the accident," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said Saturday. "The independent company that operates SkyCam for us is in the midst of a thorough review to determine the cause of the problem. We will work with them and bowl officials to determine our future course of action. As always our primary concern will be the safety of fans and those on the field."

ESPN has consistently used the cameras for football coverage, making it a staple of "Monday Night Football." The cameras also have been used occasionally in the NBA, NHL, NASCAR, NCAA basketball, baseball and at the island-green 17th hole at the TPC Sawgrass during The Players Championship.

The cameras, despite flying over the playing field, have rarely interfered with the action.

In 2007, a cable camera was forced to make a controlled descent during an NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks from what was called human error.

At the 2009 Las Vegas bowl between BYU and Oregon State, the overhead camera reportedly had to be taken down due to wind gusts of around 40 mph.

The incident at the Insight Bowl occurred with Iowa trying to rally from a 10-point deficit in the closing minutes.

While lining up for a play near the 20-yard line at the south end of Sun Devil Stadium, two Hawkeyes had to jump out of the way when the camera fell when the wire appeared to snap with 2:22 left.

McNutt dodged the camera as it fell behind him, but became entangled in the guide wire after it thudded to the ground. McNutt suffered only a minor scratch, but the game was delayed for about five minutes as crews dragged the camera off the field and made sure the wire was out of the way.

McNutt was able to joke about the incident.

"I fell like somebody was trying to kill me on their (Oklahoma's) staff," he said. "If you are looking, I'm looking for you. No. It was lucky it didn't hit me."

Just days after reports surfaced that Russell Brand and Katy Perry spent Christmas apart, the British comedian/actor has filed for divorce from his pop star wife.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," Russell said in a statement to the Associated Press on Friday.

According to the TMZ, Russell, who filed in Los Angeles, cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split.

Russell was photographed over the holidays in London, without his wedding band on, while Katy was spotted in Hawaii, also without a wedding ring on her finger.

Russell and Katy married in October 2010.

Earlier this month, Russell spoke about the couple's plans to start a family, telling Ellen DeGeneres he longed to hear the pitter-patter of little feet.

"Katy says you are going to try and start a family. Are you going to have a family?" Ellen asked during an interview for "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

"I would like one. I love those little babies in the beginning," Russell answered.

"Yeah, that's how they start out," Ellen chimed in.

"They're so lovely in that bit. Me and Katy are godparents to two twin boys. They're called Sam and Donovan," Russell said of the 1-year-olds.

"I can learn from them," Russell continued. "Me and Katy are their godparents, which means we're responsible for their spiritual growth. Should be interesting."

During his December "Ellen" visit, Russell also hit back at the rumors he and Katy had split.

"There are always rumors, aren't there? In the end you have to just not engage with Internet technology, which is difficult because [of] a lot of the nude women websites I quite enjoy," he said with a laugh. "But they've had to go. I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar.

"Yeah. I am really happily married," he said at the time.
