The heart. Something so strong, yet so weak. Powerful enough to last on and on, to continue pounding through even the most difficult of circumstances, yet vulnerable to shatter at even the simplest of words. Living from electrical signals, and also dying from them. Some view the heart as the centre of our souls. Many sayings and lessons have sprung from it over the years. Let's get to the heart of the matter, shall we? Hearts are our greatest strengths and our greatest weaknesses.
Our minds may tell us what the logical actions, but our heart ? the metaphorical one, at least, if not the physical one too ? tells us what is the 'right' action. It is the base of our emotions. People are asked to show some heart when someone begs them to be merciful. A cruel person is said to be coldhearted. Emotions are what allow us to be merciful, what allow us to help others. Emotions let us show compassion, love. Emotions are also our downfall. They let us show hatred, anger. Sorrow. Distress. Pain. Fury. Loneliness. Wrath. Greed. Envy. They are what allow us to be manipulated, deceived, exploited. Beaten. Broken. At our weakest moments, some say we are drowning in emotions.
Wouldn't it be lovely, to be stripped of these emotions, this weakness? To be able to function following only logic and plans? To never suffer from sorrow or anger? To have all the negatives stripped away?
That is what the Chi Humans are. The Chi, pronounced 'Ki', are a genetically modified species of human incapable of feeling emotions. Whether they were born in a lab or stripped of emotions later in life does not matter. The Chi have no envy, no jealousy, no discrimination. They do not care about their origins. They do not care if someone is superior to them. They do not care about anything more than the task of hand.
There are four main levels of Chi, each one having a different state of awareness.
Level One is the goal of all, Chi or unmodified humans alike. It is a level of perfection; a state completely lacking emotions. The Level One Chi are completely self-aware, yet completely incapable of feeling. They occupy the highest status in society, often holding government positions, and are often the wealthiest of them all. They often have very eccentric, extravagant appearances, and tend to spend their money on elegant fripperies to adorn their household and wardrobes.
Level Two Chi are the aristocrats of society. They do not hold leading positions, but they still are very wealthy and many are quite famous and powerful. These Chi have not yet attained the state of perfection that Level Ones have, but they are coming close. They are almost entirely devoid of emotions, only ever feeling the very strongest bursts of rage or joy, and are able to maintain a stoic mask almost every second of the day. Like Level Ones, these Chi choose to spend their money on assorted trinkets and garish accessories, although their appearances are not nearly as wild as those of the Level Ones.
Level Three is already fairly low in the ranking. These Chi are newer ones, many of them being people who saved up for operations rather than being born into a lab. While they do have money, it is generally only enough to live a comfortable life. They generally work as scientists and teachers and business men. Basically, they are the 'intellectuals' of society. Their control over emotions is far from perfect, and many of them lose control for a few moments, especially when placed in situations where they face strong emotions. They tend to wear fairly plain clothes, adorning them with a few minor accessories here and there, and generally have very plain appearances.
Level Four Chi are the very lowest of free people in society. They have minimal control over their emotions, only really being able to stop themselves from suddenly showing strong emotions such as hatred or sorrow in society. They are considered to be children by the levels higher than them, and most of them are fairly young, their ages ranging between a year and fifteen years old. Most are unemployed, although some of the slightly older ones may have jobs such as waiting restaurants or working the checkout lines of grocery stores.
Unmodified Humans are the lowest of the low. They are the slaves and the servants, the untouchables. As their name may imply, these are 'normal' humans. They have little to no control over their emotions, and therefore are considered inferior by all of the Chi. The few free ones have the jobs that nobody else wants, such as cleaning the streets or disposing of garbage. Many are also servants for higher ranking Chi. The greatest portion of the Unmods, as they are often called, are, however, slaves. They are kept by the Chi for a variety of reasons, whether they are used as workers or just kept as pets as a symbol of status. Their low ranking does not automatically imply poverty, although many of the Unmods are quite poor. Those who work as servants for the Chi can actually become quite wealthy, especially if they work for higher ranked Chi. However, many of the wealthy Unmods don't stay Unmods for very long, since it is the goal of all of them to get an operation to become Chi as quickly as possible.
Recently, a new group has risen up. They are known by all as the Junsya. Deemed by many to be radicals, the Junsya consists mainly of Unmods and lower level Chi who believe that emotions are something sacred, something that must be preserved. Most people consider them to be harmless and eccentric, but the government is slowly beginning to get scared of them. The Junsya are rising in power and in numbers, and word of a rebellion is on the wind. Now, it is a death sentence to be associated with the Junsya. The government is trying to crush the organization, but their efforts have been in vain so far. Soon, it will be time to chose sides. Which one will you be on?
Heart and Soul is a dystopian roleplay set in the distant future. It is driven both by a loosely structured plot as well as by the characters and what decisions they will make. There are still eight roles left open for characters, so, come one, come all! The roleplay will begin fairly soon, but that does not mean new people cannot join. New characters will be able to jump in at any point, so, please, if you are interested, head over to the roleplay, found here!
