LEWISBURG ? There is a new support group in the area, designed just for young adults who are cancer survivors.? Dawn Spuesens of the American Cancer Society said some key cancer fighters in the area teamed up to form this support group including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the American Cancer Society, Geisinger Medical Center, Evangelical Community Hospital, Susquehanna Health and Cancer Care of Central P.A.

She said, ?The group decided one of the things we don?t have in the area is support for young cancer survivors.? We felt that we were missing that group so they formed a support group.?

Shelly Walter is a nurse navigator for the Geisinger Cancer Service Line.? She says this kind of support group is needed in the region.? Walter said, ?From the time that their family physician finds something abnormal, the fear and fear of the unknown can be overwhelming.? For many people this is something completely new that they?ve never had to deal with on their own.? Especially for young adults trying to balance family and treatments, it can be very overwhelming.?

The first event planned for the support group is a Survivor?s Picnic on June 2 for young cancer survivors and their families. They define a young cancer survivor as someone between 18 and 39, but say everyone is welcome. The event will be held at the Montour Preserve fromnoonto2 p.m.? and is free for those who attend, although registration is required.? Spuesens says you can call 1-800-822-2873 to RSVP for the event.? (Ali Stevens)
