Attention gamers, Wreck-it Ralph is the movie?you?ve?been waiting for.
Disney?s animated effort about a Donkey-Kong like villain from an 8-bit arcade game trying to do some good pushes all the right buttons and is a must-watch for fans of videogames both young and old.
So why exactly should you watch it? Read on.
The movie is tailor-made for gamers
Wreck-it Ralph is tribute to the videogames and the culture it has spawned. Videogame characters and references are found left and right. The movie?s score has chiptune (8-bit music) influences. And characters in the movie are shown reacting to game players, even addressing them as ?the gamers?. It?s a safe bet to say that if you are a gamer, you?ll get the feeling that this movie was made with you in mind.
?It Understands how videogames are actually made
?More than halfway into the movie?s?run-time? the movie subtly explores the inner-workings of how games are programmed / developed. While I can?t say exactly how the movie does this without spoiling it, expect to find nods to actual game code and systems, bugs, unfinished assets, and the progression of video game technology.
It?s not based on a game franchise, but video games in general
Let?s be honest, there?aren?t?any excellent movies based on video-games. From Street Fighter to Mortal Kombat, From Tomb Raider to Doom, these movies have been met negatively by both fans and critics. A testament to this is that in Rotten Tomatoes? 2010 list of the best game-based movies released in the US, the top movie on the list (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within) only has a Tomatometer score of 44%. Wreck-it Ralph is great because it?isn?t?about any particular videogame franchise but about videogames in-general. The movie isn?t encumbered by trying to be faithful to the source material while also wanting to bring in viewers who have no interest in the actual games it was based on. Instead, Wreck-it Ralph presents an original and very interesting story about videogames and the people who play them.
