Japanese airlines had Dreamliner battery issues before recent incidents

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's two biggest airlines replaced below-par lithium-ion batteries on their Boeing Co 787 Dreamliners in the months before separate incidents led to the technologically advanced aircraft being grounded worldwide due to battery problems.

Comments from both All Nippon Airways , the new Boeing jetliner's biggest customer to date, and Japan Airlines Co Ltd point to reliability issues with the batteries long before a battery caught fire on a JAL 787 at Boston's airport and a second battery was badly charred and melted on an ANA domestic flight that was forced into an emergency landing.

ANA said it changed 10 batteries on its 787s last year, but did not inform accident investigators in the United States because the incidents, including five batteries that had unusually low charges, did not compromise the plane's safety, spokesman Ryosei Nomura said on Wednesday.

JAL also replaced batteries on the 787 "on a few occasions", said spokeswoman Sze Hunn Yap, declining to be more specific on when units were replaced or whether these were reported to authorities.

ANA did, however, inform Boeing of the faults that began in May, and returned the batteries to their manufacturer, GS Yuasa Corp . A spokesman for the battery maker declined to comment on Wednesday. Shares of the company fell 1.2 percent.

Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said the airplane maker could not comment as the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has indicated this is now part of their investigation.

LITTLE HEADWAY

The New York Times earlier quoted an NTSB spokeswoman as saying the agency would include these "numerous issues" with the 787 battery in its investigations.

Under aviation inspection rules, airlines are required to perform detailed battery inspections once every two years.

Officials are carrying out detailed tests on the batteries, chargers and monitoring units in Japan and the United States, but have so far made little headway in finding out what caused the battery failures.

Japan's transport ministry said the manufacturing process at the company which makes the 787 battery's monitoring unit did not appear to be linked to the problem on the ANA Dreamliner that made the emergency landing.

The NTSB said on Tuesday it was carrying out a microscopic investigation of the JAL 787 battery. Neither it nor the Japan Transport Safety Board has been able to say when they are likely to complete their work.

The global fleet of 50 Dreamliners - 17 of which are operated by ANA - remain grounded, increasing the likely financial impact to Boeing, which is still producing the aircraft but has stopped delivering them, and the airlines that fly the Dreamliner.

Boeing is due to report its latest quarterly earnings later on Wednesday, and ANA posts its earnings on Thursday. ANA shares rose 0.56 percent on Wednesday.

How Obama will deliver his climate promise

Editorial: "Challenge unscientific thinking, whatever its cause"

BARACK OBAMA is certainly talking the talk on climate change - promising to put the fight against global warming at the heart of his second term. What's more surprising is that the US - historically, the world's biggest emitter - actually seems to be walking the walk. It is on track to meet Obama's 2009 pledge to cut US emissions by 17 per cent, from 2005 levels, by 2020. The target could even be exceeded, which may give a boost to the long-stalled international climate talks.

There's no realistic possibility of passing new laws to curb US greenhouse gas emissions - Republican control of the House of Representatives will see to that. So some pundits were scratching their heads at Obama's climate pledge in last week's inaugural address. But independent analyses paint an upbeat picture of the progress he can make simply by using existing laws.

After the gloom that followed the failure, in Obama's first term, to pass a national cap-and-trade scheme to cut emissions, the new mood of optimism may seem surprising. Yet it is backed by hard numbers, laid out in a report released last October by Resources for the Future (RFF), a think tank based in Washington DC.

The group totted up emissions reductions likely to result from action taken by states and cities, and cuts that will occur through market forces as a glut of cheap natural gas encourages power utilities to burn gas instead of coal - which emits far more for the same amount of energy generated. Together, these get about a third of the way to Obama's pledge.

But the biggest contribution comes from regulations under the Clean Air Act, including vehicle fuel economy standards that are already in place. Controls on emissions from power plants that are expected from the US Environmental Protection Agency make up the rest (see diagram). Given all this, RFF estimates that the US could cut emissions by 16.3 per cent by 2020.

"The US had been doing more than we're given credit for," says Matt Woerman, one of the report's authors. "As an American citizen, I'm pleasantly surprised."

"The 2020 target does seem to be in reach," agrees Kevin Kennedy, who heads the US climate change initiative at World Resources Institute, also in Washington DC. The think tank is expected to draw similar conclusions in a report due for release in early February.

According to Woerman, about two-thirds of the cuts outlined in the RFF report are already "baked-in". And emissions could be pushed down further still if the EPA is aggressive in regulating existing US power plants.

The RFF report assumed that the EPA would demand modest efficiency improvements for each type of plant. But the agency could get stronger cuts by setting a combined and more ambitious target for coal and gas-fired plants, and leave it to utilities and states to decide how to get there.

That would provide fresh incentives for power companies to ditch coal for natural gas. It could even bring in cap-and-trade by the back door, if companies and states decide schemes like the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, launched by a coalition of north-east US states, could help make the cuts.

According to an analysis from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), released in December, more aggressive policies like these could cut emissions from fossil fuel plants by 26 per cent, from 2005 levels, by 2020 - equivalent to an additional 10 per cent shaved off total US emissions.

Other options open to Obama include an aggressive phase-out of hydrofluorocarbons - refrigerants that are potent greenhouse gases - and plugging methane leaks (see "Fixing America's gas leak").

No one has yet calculated the amount by which the US could exceed Obama's pledge, but Woerman is optimistic. "I think we can definitely blow past the target," he says. "Maybe we could get to 25 per cent."

Numbers like that would give Obama new authority in talks with other major polluters such as China, which have been reluctant to sign up for emissions cuts while the US seemed to drag its feet. "The US will have much more credibility and influence in the next international climate negotiations if it shows, by 2014 and 2015, that it is making good on the president's pledge," says David Doniger, climate policy director with the NRDC.

This article appeared in print under the headline "Yes, Obama can deliver on climate"

Fixing America's gas leak

Measured over a century, methane has 25 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide - so the last thing the planet needs is for the stuff to be escaping into the atmosphere. Yet that's happening on a massive scale in the US, through leaks from production wells and the pipes that distribute natural gas.

The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates total losses at 2.4 per cent of the gas being extracted, but the true figure could be higher. A survey in Colorado, led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, last year suggested the region's wells were losing some 4 per cent of what is produced.

Putting firmer numbers on the problem is the goal of a study led by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) in New York City. It should have figures for production wells by the end of March, and for the entire distribution system by January 2014.

With better numbers in hand, the government could demand the leaks are plugged. "It is quite possible to produce natural gas with minimal 'fugitive' emissions," says Mark Brownstein of the EDF. "It may just be a question of operational and maintenance practice."

Official: Florida vs South Carolina, Wednesday, 8:00 PM, SEC Network

The South Carolina Gamecocks are the next team to test themselves against the league leading, and currently ranked # 4, Florida Gators. This will be the first of a slate of games where we will see our guys play 4 out of 5 in the confines of the O-Dome. The Rowdy Reptiles are going to get a good workout over the next couple of weeks with the last of these 5 being the Kentucky Wildcats. It should be a really exciting time as they set the Dome rocking and even get the older fans involved.

The Gamecocks come in with an overall record of 12-7 including 2-4 in conference play. Their best win to date has been a 21 point win over Arkansas in their last outing. However all of their losses have been close ones so we can expect a team that is going to fight hard for an upset. There's not a whole lot that can be said with respect to our game at this point as once again it is a matter of the Gator players focusing on the team at hand. If they do and continue to play like they have been then it should be another win similar to the last few.

For those who don't know, Prather is not scheduled to play this game but there is a chance he may be ready by Saturday.

Go Gators!!!!!

Pregame notes are available here

Twinkie lovers can relax: Hostess sale is imminent

36 min.

The indestructible Twinkie appears to be one step closer to a comeback.?

Hostess Brands is close to announcing that it has picked two investment firms ? C. Dean Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management ? as the lead bidders for its Twinkies and other snack cakes, according to a source close to the situation.??

The so-called stalking horse bid would be for more than $400 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. It would serve as the baseline offer for the business and could be topped by others at an auction.??A judge would have to approve any final sale.??

A deal, part of Hostess's bankruptcy reorganization, is not yet final, said the source, who declined to be identified as the discussions are not public.??

Spokesmen for Metropoulos and Apollo were not immediately available to comment. Hostess declined to comment.?

After years of management turmoil and turnover, Hostess declared it was going out of business and selling its brands in November.?

Kermadec Trench: Boring eels

Another early start today.? I released the fish trap first and the ascent and location was good.? We scrambled the thing on deck to find it had actually worked.? We caught a sleeper shark (Somniosidae antarcticus), a subnose eel (Simenchelys parasitica) and a cusk eel (Spectrunculus spp.).? Amongst all that were dozens of amphipods, most notably Eurythenes gryllus, some isopods and a few decapods. So the trap works, samples are being taken and sub sampled, all is well on that front.

Next was the nail biter: I released the Hadal-Lander and it made its ascent.? For reasons unbeknown to us, it took six of us over half an hour to find the thing on the surface.? After starting to sweat a little bit about where on Earth (or rather the sea) it could be, it miraculously turned up.? We brought the thing aboard and I started stripping it down to see what it had filmed.

Now, given the incredible run of bad luck I have had with this thing last year, I honestly had it in my mind that it would be void of data, but to my surprise it was full.? Not only that, the lights were good, the illumination was even, it framed well and most importantly, the video footage was full of deep-sea fish. I could have ran out on deck and hugged it when I watched back some of the footage (but I didn?t).? In brief it included a large ray, lots of cusk eels, chimaeras, blue hake, decapods and subnose eels.

While most of the footage was, well, just really entertaining to watch, in my mind the most interesting was watching the snubnoses.? They are called ?parasitica? because despite looking as dumb as a block of cheese, they bore their heads into dead carcasses and drink the blood.? There have even been cases of them boring into live fish.? I have photographed this behavior before, but this time it is in video, and lots of it.? They place their heads on the surface of the bait, open their mouth and then start spinning their whole body, eventually boring into it and then remaining there for some time afterwards. It is perhaps not something to show the kids, but it was fascinating to watch it.

We later recovered the Abyssal-lander and found it had taken stills of these usual suspects but also included some rather large stone crabs, which itself was interesting.

No rest for wicked though, with everything downloaded and backed up we steamed to the 3000 m site and deployed the Abyssal-Lander, followed shortly by the fish trap at 3250 m and finally the Hadal-Lander went down to 3500 m.

It was a good day knowing that all the grief that hunk of junk has caused me these last twelve months is actually paying off.? I shouldn?t say that, I love it really.

More than 1 brain behind E=mc2

Monday, January 28, 2013

Two American physicists outline the role played by Austrian physicist Friedrich Hasen?hrl in establishing the proportionality between the energy (E) of a quantity of matter with its mass (m) in a cavity filled with radiation. In a paper about to be published in EPJ H, Stephen Boughn from Haverford College in Pensylvannia and Tony Rothman from Princeton University in New Jersey argue how Hasen?hrl's work, for which he now receives little credit, may have contributed to the famous equation E=mc2.

According to science philosopher Thomas Kuhn, the nature of scientific progress occurs through paradigm shifts, which depend on the cultural and historical circumstances of groups of scientists. Concurring with this idea, the authors believe the notion that mass and energy should be related did not originate solely with Hasen?hrl. Nor did it suddenly emerge in 1905, when Einstein published his paper, as popular mythology would have it.

Given the lack of recognition for Hasen?hrl's contribution, the authors examined the Austrian physicist's original work on blackbody radiation in a cavity with perfectly reflective walls. This study seeks to identify the blackbody's mass changes when the cavity is moving relative to the observer.

They then explored the reason why the Austrian physicist arrived at an energy/mass correlation with the wrong factor, namely at the equation: E = (3/8) mc2. Hasen?hrl's error, they believe, stems from failing to account for the mass lost by the blackbody while radiating.

Before Hasen?hrl focused on cavity radiation, other physicists, including French mathematician Henri Poincar? and German physicist Max Abraham, showed the existence of an inertial mass associated with electromagnetic energy. In 1905, Einstein gave the correct relationship between inertial mass and electromagnetic energy, E=mc2. Nevertheless, it was not until 1911 that German physicist Max von Laue generalised it to include all forms of energy.

Lose your job to technology? Share your story

According to an Associated Press series published last week, the United States lost 7.5 million jobs during the recession, but in the three and a half years since it ended, the country has recovered just 47 percent of those jobs.

What?s worse: Half the jobs lost from December 2007 to June 2009 were middle-class employment, and of the 47 percent of work reclaimed, just 2 percent of those gigs pay middle-class wages, says the AP.

Among the causes, the often-fingered culprit is technology.

Even in a healthy economy, computers have increasingly assumed once-human-held work. In a wrecked economy, they?re capitalizing on it: Employers who weathered tough times over 18 months of the Great Recession learned to do more (or at least as much) with fewer humans and more automation. Now that the recovery is underway, they?re not looking back.

To put a human face to technology-caused unemployment, Yahoo! News is inviting readers who have recently lost a job (whether it?s to computer software, a factory robot or something similar) to share their stories. If technological innovation in the workplace has replaced your position, we?re interested in publishing your first-person account and possibly using it in a project.

There are two ways you can participate. Please choose one and submit your story by Friday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. ET.

1) Write your story at Yahoo! Contributor Network.

Stories that meet our criteria may be published on Yahoo! News under your byline. Learn more about what we?re looking for.

Or:

2) Email your story to contributor-news@yahoo-inc.com.

In 300 to 400 words, share your first-person story of losing your job to advancements in technology and workplace innovation. Please be very detailed and include: Where you worked (company and city), for how long, what you did (be brief but detailed) and when you lost your job. What technological advancement caused you to lose your job? Please be specific. Was it new computer software? A robot? Machines? How did your company use it? Did other people lose their jobs, too? What, specifically, did the new technology do that replaced your duties?

While sharing that information, please also touch on these questions: Are you employed now? If so, what are you doing? Are you making the same wage? How long did it take you to find a job? How do you feel about technological advancements in the workplace? Do you blame your former employer? Did losing your job prompt you to get different or increased training? If so, what, specifically? Also, please include your age and where you live.

Thank you for considering participating. We look forward to receiving your first-person account.

Tech, small business can learn plenty from Starbucks - Daily Freeman

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- You have just got to be on the conference call for some companies. If you don't catch it live, stream the Webcast or, at the very least, read the transcript, you're only seeing what the financial media puts in front of you. A formulaic series of numbers that, while meaningful, do not tell the entire story, particularly with respect to a company as dynamic as Starbucks (SBUX) .

Family left devastated after pet cat is killed by poison - This is ...

ANIMAL lover Tracey Heap has been left distraught after her two cats were poisoned with antifreeze within days of each other.

The 46-year-old was devastated when 16-month-old tabby Beauty had to be put to sleep after consuming a lethal dose of the liquid.

  1. Tracey Heap's daughter Grace Hansbury aged six holding seven month old Charlie_

And her other cat Charlie is also being treated by vets after displaying the same symptoms.

Now Staffordshire Police are investigating whether both cats could have been deliberately targeted.

Tracey, from Smallthorne, said: "Poor Beauty just kept being sick.

"I thought it was just a bug, but then one day I came home and she was making this horrendous noise and she started fitting violently.

"She had lock jaw and it didn't stop, even when we got her to the vets."

Tracey rushed the cat to the PDSA, in Stoke, where staff took the decision to put Beauty down after finding she had dangerous levels of anti-freeze in her system.

Tracey, who lives in William Ruston Road with her six-year-old daughter Grace, added: "She had a vile death. No animal should ever have to go through what she did.

"Grace saw it all and she was so upset which makes it even more distressing.

"She hasn't stopped crying since it happened. We're all devastated." Shortly after Beauty was put to sleep earlier this month, six-month-old Charlie, who is Beauty's kitten, has also had to be treated by vets for permanent kidney damage after they found that he too had been exposed to the poison.

Tracey added: "He is okay at the moment.

"He hasn't had such extreme symptoms as Beauty had, but he could take a turn for the worse at any time. That's our fear.

"He is on prescription food now and I am petrified of letting him out in case it happens again.

"But cats need to be outdoors and it is unfair on him. I don't know how long I can keep it up.

"I know there's more anti-freeze about at the moment because of the cold weather but we think they have both been deliberately targeted.

"I just want other people to be aware that this is happening."

The RSPCA is now warning pet owners to be vigilant following the poisonings.

A spokesman for the animal charity said: "Most people are unaware of the hidden dangers to pets from antifreeze poisoning. Unfortunately, many animals find the taste of antifreeze very attractive, and ingesting even the smallest amount can lead to kidney failure and death, especially in cats.

"We are deeply concerned and extremely saddened by the recent spates of antifreeze poisonings in cats across the country.

"We would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that antifreeze poisoning can cause animals pain, suffering and distress, ultimately resulting in their death."

The spokesman added: "The poisoning of a cat can constitute a criminal offence.

"Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the maximum penalty for anyone found guilty of this offence is up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine of around ?20,000."

Staffordshire Police confirmed officers were investigating the poisonings.

A spokesman said: "We are aware of the matter and are liaising with the RSPCA."

(AP) ? The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. The FBI is investigating.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

The FBI's Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of the Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, said in a statement that "we were aware as soon as it happened and are handling it as a criminal investigation. We are always concerned when someone illegally accesses another person's or government agency's network."

Armstrong meeting with USADA appears unlikely

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Lance Armstrong's lawyers say the cyclist will talk more about drug use in the sport, just likely not to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that led the effort to strip him of his Tour de France titles.

In a testy exchange of letters and statements revealing the gulf between the two sides, USADA urged Armstrong to testify under oath to help "clean up cycling."

Armstrong's attorneys responded that the cyclist would rather take his information where it could do more good ? namely to cycling's governing body and World Anti-Doping Agency officials.

USADA's response to that: "The time for excuses is over."

The letters, obtained Friday by The Associated Press, underscore the continuing feud between Armstrong and USADA CEO Travis Tygart, the man who spearheaded the investigation that uncovered a complex doping scheme on Armstrong's U.S. Postal Service teams.

Armstrong's seven Tour de France victories were taken away last year and he was banned for life from the sport.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey last week, Armstrong admitted doping, said he owed a long list of apologies and that he would like to see his lifetime ban reduced so he can compete again.

His most realistic avenue toward that might be telling USADA everything he knows in a series of interviews the agency wants started no later than Feb. 6.

That seems unlikely.

Armstrong attorney Tim Herman responded to USADA's first letter, sent Wednesday, by saying his client's schedule is already full, and besides, "in order to achieve the goal of 'cleaning up cycling,' it must be WADA and the (International Cycling Union) who have overall authority to do so."

By Friday night, Herman strongly suggested Armstrong won't meet with USADA at all but intends to appear before the UCI's planned "truth and reconciliation" commission.

"Why would we cooperate (with USADA)?" Herman said in a telephone interview. "USADA isn't interested in cleaning up cycling. Lance has said, 'I'll be the first guy in the chair when cycling is on trial, truthfully, under oath, in every gory detail.' I think he's going testify where it could actually do some good: With the body that's charged with cleaning up cycling," Herman said.

In its last letter to Armstrong, sent Friday evening, USADA attorney William Bock said his agency and WADA work hand-in-hand in that effort.

"Regardless, and with or without Mr. Armstrong's help, we will move forward with our investigation for the good of clean athletes and the future of sport," Bock's letter reads.

The letters confirm a Dec. 14 meeting in Denver involving Armstrong, Tygart and their respective attorneys, which is when, in Tygart's words, Armstrong should have started thinking about a possible meeting with USADA.

"He has been given a deadline of February 6th to determine whether he plans to come in and be part of the solution," Tygart said in a statement. "Either way, USADA is moving forward with our investigation on behalf of clean athletes."

The letters were sent to the AP after details about a Tygart interview with "60 Minutes," being aired Sunday, were made public.

Among Tygart's claims: Armstrong is lying when he says he didn't dope during his 2009-10 comeback.

Tygart said USADA's report on Armstrong's doping included evidence Armstrong was still cheating in those years.

"His comeback was totally clean," Herman said. "It's pretty fashionable to kick Lance Armstrong around right now."

Tygart also reiterated that an Armstrong associate offered USADA a donation of more than $200,000. Armstrong denied that in his interview with Winfrey, too.

In advancing his claim that USADA is only a bit player in the investigation, Herman noted in his letter, sent to USADA on Friday, that most cycling teams are based in Europe.

"I'm pretty sick of people trying to blame a European cycling culture that goes back to the 1920s on one guy," Herman said.

Bock's response to that: "Your suggestion that there is some other body with which Lance should coordinate is misguided," he said in his final letter.

Brooklyn Assemblyman Vito Lopez Declines To Testify In Probe

(Friday, January 25th, 2013)

A state assemblyman from Brooklyn is declining to testify in an investigation by a state ethics committee that found he violated the chamber?s harassment policy.

His lawyer says Assemblyman Vito Lopez also doesn?t plan to testify in an inquiry into the matter by a special prosecutor.

Gerald Lefcourt told The New York Times he?s advised Lopez not to testify in either inquiry because of the criminal investigation.

Until he knows specifically what the district attorney is looking, Lefcourt?s advice is to provide all the information he can short of having Lopez testify.

The committee has issued a subpoena for Lopez?s testimony. It has declined to comment.

The prosecutor?s office couldn?t immediately be reached for comment. It hasn?t asked Lopez to testify.

The Democrat maintains the allegations are untrue.

WATCH: Osborne - not for turning on the economy

Today 1) Growth figures to be released.? And Osborne's not for turning as he snubs IMF plea to ease austerity...

Osborne as Thatcher"The Chancellor insisted he will plough ahead with spending cuts until 2017. The IMF?s chief economist Olivier Blanchard had called for the UK to slow down its austerity programme. But speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mr Osborne said: ?I don?t think it is right to abandon a credible deficit plan.?? ?We do have to carry on with the cuts,? he said. ?We?re not about to bring that programme to an end. Gay Tory logo"The issue threatens to shatter the Tory unity that Mr Cameron engendered with his Europe speech this week. MPs have warned party whips that the issue of gay marriage is by far the most toxic for them among grassroots party members. The Times has spoken this week to MPs from all parts of the country, all of whom have reported that local association members are deserting the party over the issue. Opposition to gay marriage had dominated their postbags and was driving members to UKIP, the MPs said." - The Times (?)

Ruth Davidson"She will say the Conservatives are unfairly characterised as controlled by Westminster, and they need to prove to voters ?beyond all reasonable doubt? they put Scotland first. No early poll bounce for Cameron's EU speech

"The first YouGov poll since the Prime Minister's speech, the?fieldwork for which was conducted between 5pm on Tuesday and 5pm yesterday, shows no sign of an early boost for the Tories. Instead, support for Labour has risen by two points to 43 per cent, while the Tories are unchanged on 31 per cent. We will, of course, need to wait until the weekend polls for a clear picture of what effect, if any, Cameron's speech has had on the Conservatives' standing." - The New Statesman

The Prime Minister meets Merkel in Davos.? She doesn't mention his speech during hers...

Cameron and merkel
"Cameron held a 20-minute meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss his plan to negotiate a new deal for Britain. She had indicated a ?fair compromise? could be possible to allow the UK to loosen ties. He also met other EU premiers including Italy?s Mario Monti and Enda Kenny of Ireland. Mr Cameron made a passionate defence of his referendum plan in a speech to the Forum. He said: ?This is not about turning our backs on Europe ? quite the opposite." - Daily Express

...But Clegg suggests EU referendum wouldn't hold up a second Coalition...

"Nick Clegg, Britain?s deputy prime minister, said Mr Cameron?s proposals for a renegotiation were ?vague? and it was ?wholly implausible? that a future Conservative government could rewrite the rules to the sole advantage of the UK. However the pro-European Liberal Democrat leader did not rule out the possibility that he would back Mr Cameron?s call for an in-out referendum, if the 2015 general election propels his party back into a second coalition with Mr Cameron?s Tories." - Financial Times (?)

Paul Goodman: Cameron's speech was a gamble to get the Euro-sceptic monkey off his back

"So why has this cautious politician, naturally restrained in temperament and outlook, taken such an extraordinary gamble, risking the very unity and future of his party? There is no great mystery about the answer. It is the only way he can think of to get the eurosceptic monkey off his back. Almost half his backbenchers voted for an EU referendum last year. Fake Amazon Page Is Best Online Resume Ever

We don't actually know if Philippe Dubost is any good at his job. But boy, can he throw together a resume.

Dubost, a web product manager currently based in Paris, is looking to travel for his next position. So he decided to make his CV stand out anywhere in the world -- by mimicking an Amazon product page.

[More from Mashable: Amazon?s Latest Kindles Finally Come to Canada]

The result, "Philippe's Amaz'ing Resume," is a pitch-perfect pastiche. Suggesting that you add the applicant to your shopping cart to see his price is such a clever way of asking to be hired, we're amazed no one thought of it before. Especially when followed by the urgent reminder: "only 1 left in stock. Order soon!"

You can see the full resume here. But in case Dubost's site has been overwhelmed by traffic -- he's already had to change his web hosting service once, according to his Twitter feed -- here's another screenshot.

[More from Mashable: Amazon Woos Advertisers With What It Knows About Consumers]

Dubost has taken pains to replicate every last aspect of an Amazon page -- even inserting an ad. We've seen resumes that look like Facebook pages and Twitter feeds before, but none have this much attention to detail.

And given the fact that hiring is a transaction, making it look like the world's largest store makes a ton of sense.

Business Lobbying In 2012 Soared, Buoyed By Fiscal Cliff Crisis

WASHINGTON -- Lobbying expenditures for large pro-business lobbying groups soared in the last quarter of 2012, driven by election-year politics, the lame-duck congressional session's increased legislation, and the fiscal cliff showdown, according to newly released data analyzed by the Center for Public Integrity.

The nonpartisan research group found that approximately half of the 100 biggest-spending lobbying organizations shelled out more money to influence the federal government in the last three months of 2012 than in the previous three months. Among those same 100, about half increased overall spending on lobbying in 2012.

The data contradicts the longstanding pattern of companies and trade groups spending less money on lobbying during election years, when members of Congress are busy campaigning, than in off years, when more legislation typically gets passed.

Leading the pack in annual spending was the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's largest pro-business advocacy group. In 2012, the chamber's lobbying spending topped $125 million, an 88 percent increase from the previous year. The lobbying figure doesn't include more than $36 million the group spent influencing the 2012 elections ($28 million of which funded attack ads against Democrats).

Another lobbying outfit that set a new record in 2012 was the National Association of Realtors, which spent $41.5 million lobbying Congress and the Obama administration, according to data analyzed by the Center for Responsive Politics. Of that, $15.4 million, or about 35 percent, was spent in the last three months of the year. The real estate group also spent more than $9.5 million on the 2012 elections, including about $6 million to boost Republican candidates.

Other business interests stood out for how much more they spent in the last quarter of 2012 than they did in the period from July to October. This largely reflected debates on Capitol Hill. The Business Roundtable upped lobbying in the fourth quarter by $800,000, to $4.8 million. Financial industry giant JPMorgan Chase spent $8.8 million lobbying last year, and more than $3.3 million was in the fourth quarter.

Despite high spending by major influence groups, less money ended up in the hands of K Street lobbying firms than in the past, according to lobbying disclosure data. The decline in 2012 continues a trend away from firms that had experienced rocketing growth in the past decade.

It's difficult to gauge the effectiveness of lobbying spending in 2012, because Congress and the White House have yet to hammer out key pieces of a broader budget agreement, notably the spending cuts demanded by congressional Republicans. Throughout the fiscal cliff crisis in December, lobbyists for the Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable maintained a visible presence on Capitol Hill, helping to craft Republican positions and to pressure lawmakers.

As for their election spending, groups like the Chamber of Commerce -- which backed Republicans in Senate races -- were on the losing end of the 2012 elections. For the chamber, political spending on losing Senate races topped $20 million.

Should Pet Cats Be Banned?

Outdoor cats are no friend to birds, but even many birders enjoy pet cats and keep them responsibly indoors. One New Zealand environmental advocate wants to take it a step further, however, hoping to eliminate all pet cats from his country. According to Fox News, Gareth Morgan is urging a pet cat ban in order to preserve the country's unique avifauna. While he does not stress euthanasia - leaving that option to the pet's owner - he is asking that no one buy new cats, that pets be spayed or neutered and that a national registry be instituted for the animals.

Cats are directly responsible for the extinction of several New Zealand bird species, and several more are endangered and face grave threats from these predators. While Morgan's measures are extreme, they are not without precedent. The state of Florida prohibits several types of pet snakes, for example, and this month the state is hunting down invasive pythons that have devastated native birds.

Backyard birders can take steps to discourage feral cats, but even the most aggressive techniques aren't always effective. Do you agree with Morgan's proposal? What measures would you like to see in place to control outdoor cats? Share your thoughts in the comments!
